About Irena Dumicz – flamenco dancer/singer
Irena has been studying flamenco dance and song with local and international artists across Canada as well as prominent flamenco teachers in Jerez de la Frontera and Seville, Spain for many years. Irena regularly returns to Spain to study flamenco dance, song, and to deepen her understanding of the flamenco art form. She has been an active member of flamenco communities in Kelowna (BC), Halifax (NS) and Edmonton (AB).
Flamenco cante (singing) has always been at the centre of Irena’s flamenco dance passion, however it became a journey of it’s own in her flamenco pursuit. Encouraged by flamenco singer David Vazquez “El Budita” with whom Irena studied flamenco cante in 2008 edition of Atlantic Flamenco Festival, she started to pursue flamenco singing in Spain. Irena has studied extensively with Esperanza Fernandez, Segundo Falcon and Jose Anillo. In 2010, supported by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, she spent over 5 months studying dance and cante in Spain. She returned to continue her study of cante for another 2 months in 2013. In Canada Irena has had the privilege to study flamenco cante with Vancouver based flamenco singer Stephanie Pedraza, as well as guest artists from Spain. Irena has been performing flamenco dance and singing collaborating with flamenco artists in Edmonton, Calgary (AB) and Halifax (NS).
