Rosanna Terracciano’s film project – A Quiet Flamenco

Two years ago Canadian dance artist Rosanna Terracciano invited me to participate in her film project A Quiet Flamenco – exposing the introverted, vulnerable and muted aspects of flamenco dance through film. one artist at a time. I am honoured to be one of six artists from across Canada invited for this initial round of films which was just completed in December and includes my work as a flamenco dancer and pianist.

Other artists in this initial series include:

Myriam Allard (Montréal)
Sarah Bronsard (Montréal)
Claire Marchand (Ottawa/Winnipeg)
Veronica Maguire (Victoria)
Oscar Nieto (Vancouver)

Rosanna received the Canada Council for the Arts’ Jacqueline Lemieux Prize in 2017 for this work and is planning to continue to expand the project with more artists in the future.

This month it was a featured article online in The Dance Current – www.thedancecurrent.com/video/quiet-flamenco.

You can check out all six of the films at the website aquietflamenco.com
and follow the project on facebook at www.facebook.com/aquietflamenco

Rosanna will be in Edmonton performing new work on January 11th and 12th at Mile Zero Dance as part of ReLoCate: Experiment #3.

Flamenco Festival Flashmob round two

There’s been a great response to the recent festival flashmob classes with participants from all levels joining in. Missed out on the recent classes? Want to review what you learned? Just want to brush up on some cante and palmas? The festival is offering a new round of choreography classes and a second cante/palmas class with Stephanie Pedraza to work on the tangos from part 2.

There is plenty of opportunity to be as little or as fully involved as you like with singing, dancing, and/or clapping. Flashmob performances are informal. All levels are welcome and the attire is street wear. There is no obligation to perform.

NEW CLASS DATES
Sunday, Feb. 11 at Sugar Swing
Friday, Feb. 16 at MarrMac (note that my classes are not running that evening)

more information and sign uphttp://bit.ly/2s5Y3cx

If you’ve got some basic arms and have done a bit of choreography, you’ll be able to follow along. More advanced? There’s a lot of opportunity to put your own flair into the choreography. There’s no footwork involved and the attire is street wear.

Don’t have any flamenco experience yet? Join in for the cante and palmas class and participate as one of our rhythmic clappers.

Not dancing much flamenco anymore? Join us for a light-hearted event and reconnect with the community.

Been involved in flamenco for some time? We’d really love to have you there to share in the energy, serve as a guide for less experienced students, and represent the high quality of flamenco in our city.

First performance dates are coming up and will be announced soon.

Hope to see you there!

Flamenco Society Cafe Cante! Flamenco Festival Flashmob!

We have some exciting events coming up in our community.

Flamenco Society – Cafe Cante – Thursday, January 25

The Flamenco Society of Edmonton has their upcoming Cafe Cante this Thursday. A monthly social gathering of Flamencos to share, practice, exchange flamenco song and clapping (Cante y Palmas) in an intimate and friendly environment. Come out and get to know your fellow flamencos.

Flamenco Flashmob!

As some of you have heard, the Edmonton Flamenco Festival is bringing their 2018 flashmob to life in February. The plan is to get Edmonton flamencos together to perform the flashmob in various public places leading up to the festival April 18 – 22.

This year’s festival flashmob is a tientos-tangos created by Vancouver’s Stephanie Pedraza. A group of local flamencos spent the fall learning their parts and came together in November for formal performances of the choreography in the Winspear lobby before an ESO evening and on stage at our December fundraiser performance “Flamenco at MacEwan”.

Our experienced flashmob dancers from the fall are offering two 1.5 hour classes for anyone wanting to learn the choreography. Stephanie Pedraza is offering a 1 hour cante and palmas group class via Skype for anyone wanting to practice singing and/or clapping.

Upcoming Class dates:
Feb. 2 at MarrMac (after my current Intro class)
Feb. 4 at Sugar Swing

You can attend one or all three classes and you’ll have enough information to take part. There is no obligation to perform. Please note, if you’ve never taken any flamenco dance before, the choreography classes are not for you! Dancers will be sharing the choreography, not teaching anyone how to dance.

If you’ve got some basic arms and have done a bit of choreography, you’ll be able to follow along. More advanced? There’s a lot of opportunity to put your own flair into the choreography. There’s no footwork involved and the attire is street wear.

Don’t have any flamenco experience yet? Join us for the cante and palmas class and participate as one of our rhythmic clappers.

Not dancing much flamenco anymore? Join us for a light-hearted event and reconnect with the community.
